Poststructuralism was a useful perspective because it offered a way of thinking about power that focused not on the individual intentions of people, but on the system of common, everyday assumptions that create reality. The locus of power that poststructuralists emphasize is not in individuals but in systems of shared meaning that reinforce mainstream ideas and silence alternatives. This was important because it captured the way that all members within systems of power— the marginalized as well as the dominant—were actors and agents in maintaining and reinforcing the status quo.
Although the presence of the researcher is an issue in all participant observation, it was exacerbated in this case because the datacollection technique of unselective recording of events required extensive notetaking. I realized that having someone stand behind her, constantly writing things down, could have a marked influence on how an engineer interacted with people. Although there was no way to control for this effect, it was minimized in this case because I was already known as a researcher and had been afforded the limited ‘‘insider’’ status described 42 Chapter 3 earlier.

I wanted to do a study that moved away from this individualistic framing of the situation and looked at more systemic issues. Poststructuralism was a useful perspective because it offered a way of thinking about power that focused not on the individual intentions of people, but on the system of common, everyday assumptions that create reality.
