Several accounts given many years later also describe his activities. Another account by Susanna Dickinson appeared in 1875 in James M. Morphis' History of Texas from Its First Discovery and Settlement. In this book she is credited as saying, "I knew Colonels Crockett, Bowie, and Travis well. Col. "8 An oft repeated bit of Alamo lore has Crockett engaging in musical duels with Scotsman John McGregor, who played the bagpipes. Crockett's lighthearted demeanor may have faded during the tedious siege.

For the purposes of this book a brief description is necessary. Texas, part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas, engaged in a revolt against Mexico in the autumn of 1835. The reasons for this revolt were many, but basically Texas was fighting for separate statehood within the Mexican Republic. Most of those involved in the revolt were emigrants to Texas from the United States and Europe. Also involved were some of the native Texans, or Tejanos as they are now called. A Texan military force was assembled hastily.

It is a "feel good" ending to the story. Of course, worlds are not going to turn on how Crockett died. However, the subject is of endless interest, as is evidenced by the many articles and books that have been generated by it. The subject certainly is still important to some students of the Alamo battle. It also may be interesting to people fascinated by historical mysteries. It is probably of interest to the many descendants of Crockett, who have had to endure watching a variety of writers and historians twist Crockett's reputation from that of an impeccable hero to that of a groveling coward.
