Both the 'growth through acquisition' strategy and the 'low-cost' strategy were coming under increasing pressure. By the late 1980s, MGE had acquired significant positions in all major world markets, and there was little left of interest to buy. At any rate, MGE had stretched its financial resources to the limit, so financing another major acquisition was not possible. At the same time, the low-cost strategy was no longer working in some business units. There were several reasons for this. First, the chemical industry was changing.
Most of them insisted on anonymity as a condition for participating in my research, but I can nevertheless describe them in general terms here. Introduction to the companies Four of the eight primary sites were independently managed divisions of a diversified European corporation called Manufacturing Group Europe, or MGE (a pseudonym). MGE is a diversified manufacturer with interests in a variety of chemical and materials science specialties, as well as in phannaceutical and consumer products. Each of its divi sions was rated (from polls in business magazines) as an average innovator.
The way in which the outside laboratory had carried out the test did not make sense, but his engineers would not have recognized that: they did not know water treatment plants well enough, and they were not chemists.
