Saul looked Martha up and down, as if assessing her suitability to be a companion on his trip. ‘All right,’ he said at last. ‘We’ll meet over by the lake. ’ He bowed to both women, and then was gone. Kristine continued to stare into the middle distance, a distracted look on her face. ‘Petr told us about the missing children,’ said Martha quietly. ’ Kristine managed a weak smile.

With all that was going on in the village, it was surely only a matter of time before the unease and disruption spread further afield. She supposed the forest was preferable to a space station full of dust and bodies. And there was always the chance that they’d find themselves back in the research craft before too long – or maybe even back in the TARDIS. ‘It is beautiful,’ she admitted. ’ ‘Of course,’ said the Doctor. ’ ‘Piece of cake,’ said the Doctor. ’ ‘Five minutes. ’ Two hours later and they were still going. Martha wasn’t convinced that this was because they were in an especially large forest; instead, she suspected that they were simply going round in circles.
