20 We understand the selective nature of these reflections, and the ways in which memory differs from history. This book is not primarily a social or cultural history of African Americans, although it does draw upon that history for context. This book does not seek to rewrite the history of the civil rights movement or of black family, community, and educational experiences, although it does at times refer to particular aspects of that history. Nor does the book seek to interrogate the truth of every piece of information shared with us.

In many ways, one can consider these interviews a reflection of the personal armour created as sustenance for hard times.
