Fed up with the situation, Inem asked her husband for a divorce, but he refused, as did the local village authorities, who had the final say in the matter. She told me that she would have been happy to divorce him, and would not want to marry again.

Excessive attention to financial matters and the pursuit of wealth is said to indicate low status, lack of refinement, and a corresponding lack of spiritual potency (Anderson 1972; Keeler 1987, 1990; Djajadiningrat-Nieuwenhuis 1987; Hatley 1990; S. Errington 1990). Matters of money, especially where bargaining or the open pursuit of profit are involved, are seen as kasar-unrefined, uncivilized, coarse, and of low statusY Individuals who are mindful of their prestige must be careful never to show too much concern with money, lest they be seen as kasar too.

For if it is indeed the case that the women who have the most dealings with money are also perceived as being the most widely involved in illicit sexual affairs, then it would ap~ pear that there is no clear connection between the control of money and the control of desire. I should point out, however, that I never heard anyone in Solo attribute women's engagement in extramarital affairs to their uncontrollable desires. " More commonly, though, women's infidelity was imputed to economic need or ambition; for instance, a way to compensate for a slow period in the market.
