This remarkable bamboo collection has an interesting history. At the end of the last century Eugene Mazel, a prosperous French merchant, travelled to China to study silk production. He was fascinated by bamboos and brought some plants back on his ship. He planted these at Cap Ferrat on the Côte d’Azur and was amazed to see them grow and spread. Later on he bought 40 hectares of land near Anduze and dammed the river Gardon to supply his bamboos with water. Forty gardeners worked in the expanding bamboo garden for 20 years until Mazel got into financial difficulties and lost his ownership.

In many Phyllostachys species the blade is completely developed inside the shoot. This means that they are folded up, occupying just a tiny space. Such blades, when they appear, often have not only pretty colours but also very interesting patterns. Some are creased, others pleated or wavy. Phyllostachys culms have a noticeable groove, the sulcus, running along the internodes above the side branches. In Semiarundinaria this is only partially present, particularly in the lower internodes. These grooves exist because of the way the branch buds are formed in the developing shoot.
