A particularly noticeable innovation was a new “3D” process called the “tabletop” or “turntable” method, in which miniature sets were built on a turntable attached to an animation camera, upon which the character designs were overlaid. 56 In both old and new incarnations, he would remain a consistent audience favorite in the era of television, but few of his later incarnations were able to depict him with the kind of zest and feeling provided by his early Fleischer cartoons. These set a standard that was nearly impossible to match by successive generations of animators.

In spite of what had to be a humiliating end for the Fleischer brothers, the greatest productions of their studio have stood the test of time and remain as joyous and entertaining as when they were first conceived. Their artistic and technical excellence in their prime was rarely equaled elsewhere, and they retained their appeal to subsequent generations of viewers. And, as the years would pass and television animation came into its own, the true influence of the Fleischers on the development of the younger medium’s artistic maturity would become increasingly undeniable.

Other than Disney, when the general public normally thinks about “cartoons,” it is often the legendary product of this studio that they have in mind. The star characters of the “Looney Tunes” and “Merrie Melodies” produced by Warner Bros. between the mid–1930s and the early 1960s represent what is perhaps the most formidable and memorable stock company in animation history. Certainly, few other cartoon characters are as immediately recognizable through their voices and catchphrases alone, not to mention their very names and physical appearances.
