But why he did it is not a mystery. To this day controversy surrounds several key issues. First and foremost among them is the question of Georgia’s war aims. Controversy centers on the remarks of Georgian brigadier general Mamuka Kurashvili, commander of the Georgian peacekeeping contingent in South Ossetia. ” That statement suggested that Georgia’s goal was in essence to reconquer South Ossetia. But those were the remarks of a general in the field who misspoke when he found himself with a microphone in his face.

You understand how much it matters,” he told Yakobashvili. ” The president grilled Yakobashvili on the mood and disposition of his interlocutors, asking whether he thought they were lying or telling the truth.
